As we age, the abdominal skin loses its elasticity and the underlying muscles become loose and weak.
Fat distribution to the lower abdomen also increases – creating a bulge.
This loss of shape to the abdomen is further exacerbated by excess loose skin created by pregnancy or weight loss which no amount of exercise can reverse.
The tummy tuck procedure or abdominoplasty aims to remove the loose excess skin - including stretch marks - and tighten the weakened abdominal muscles.
Properly performed, a tummy tuck will produce a firm and taut abdomen and restore the waist line once obscured by loose skin folds.
Many patients often combine this procedure with liposculpturing to remove any excess fat.

Tighten up the abdomen and remove fat and excess skin with a tummy tuck.
Eating well and exercising regularly is great for losing weight, but it does nothing for the excess skin left behind. Fortunately, this leftover skin can be removed with a simple procedure.
The ageing process plays havoc with the elasticity of your skin and with the inherent strength of your underlying muscles. In your youth, your skin will look taut, healthy and full of life, but this can change as you age, drawing the skin down into unsightly rolls and folds.
Trauma and stress on the skin only accelerates this process. Maybe you succeeded in losing a great deal of weight in a short time, or perhaps your pregnancy left you with stretched skin across your abdomen. In both of these cases, the skin is pulled out of shape by the pressure of either abdominal fat or your baby bump, and is unable to spring back into place once that pressure is removed.
At Shape Clinic, we use the most sophisticated methods to remove this excess skin, and aim to leave you with only minimal scarring. Also known as an abdominoplasty procedure, a tummy tuck involves making a horizontal incision across the abdomen just above the pubic area. The muscles of the abdomen and their connecting fibres are then tightened and strengthened using stitches, before the excess skin is removed.
The process will involve sedation under a general aesthetic, so the patient won’t feel a thing during the procedure. Following a tummy tuck you may have to wear a compression bandage and have drainage tubes fitted to reduce the initial swelling. You can expect to return to work within a couple of weeks.
Some patients may only have a problem with excess skin and loose, sagging muscles. In these cases, a tummy tuck will achieve all of your desired results, tightening up the abdomen and producing a flatter, more aesthetically-pleasing tummy area.
However, if you have an issue with excess fat around your abdomen, this may require further action. Dr Liew usually advocates a liposculpture procedure in conjunction with a tummy tuck in these cases, as this will remove the extra fat and achieve more impressive results.
Dr Liew will advise you on which combination of treatments will work best for you at your consultation. Rest assured you will look your best and most beautiful following your tummy-tuck.
