Breast Reconstruction

Breast reconstruction surgery is now an option available for most women dealing
with the physical changes following mastectomy for breast cancer.

Studies have shown this to improve the emotional and physical well being of these women, many of whom are unaware of the opportunity for this type of surgery; hence they “suffer” in silence, often leading to depression.

Using new surgical techniques, we can now create natural looking breast mounds and nipples. The breast mound can be reconstructed by using the patient’s own tissue often from the abdomen (tummy) or with the use of a tissue expander, followed by a breast implant. The final stage will involve the formation of the nipple and areola.

Following surgery, most women find they can wear almost all types of clothing with complete confidence.

More About Breast Reconstruction

Choosing to have breast reconstruction surgery is an immensely personal decision, but Dr Liew can help you every step of the way.

Having a mastectomy can save your life, but – as with many cancer treatments – the aftermath can cause huge emotional pain and suffering. The key to dealing with this is not to suffer in silence, but to understand that there are avenues open to you. By reconstructing the removed breast, surgeons help cancer sufferers and survivors regain a symbolic piece of their identity and their femininity.

Breast Reconstruction Surgery

Breast reconstruction surgery involves removing tissue from another part of the body – most often the abdomen – and grafting it onto the chest, before shaping and structuring it into a new breast. Surgical techniques have advanced greatly in this field, and modern reconstructive surgery is highly effective in creating natural-looking breast mounds and nipples. While the new breast will not be functional, it can provide a huge emotional boost, as well as allowing you to regain a degree of normality after a difficult and harrowing cancer treatment.

In cases where only one breast has been removed, it may be necessary to carry out augmentation or breast lift surgery on the remaining breast in order to achieve perfect balance and symmetry. Before your surgery, Dr Liew will schedule a consultation where you can ask him any questions that may be on your mind, and he can assess exactly what course of action needs to be taken to achieve your desired results.

The procedures involved in breast reconstruction surgery may vary between patients and cases, but all will involve a general anaesthetic. In some cases, there may be enough tissue left on the chest to support a breast implant, but usually tissue will have to be taken from another part of the body and grafted onto the chest.

Once the breast implant is inserted, Dr Liew will employ state-of-the-art techniques to create a natural-looking nipple and areola for your new breast. As this type of breast surgery is more invasive than breast augmentation or reduction, most patients will be required to remain in hospital under observation, and may find upper-body movements difficult or painful for the first few days.

Recovery

The length of your recovery time depends upon the details of the surgery, but Dr Liew will schedule repeated return visits to check on your progress and monitor the results of your surgery.
